Welcome to the Average Joe Finances forum! Please introduce yourself and help our community grow. I'll start.

My name is Mike (middle name is Joseph) so I do have some type of stake in the name Joe. I live in Hawaii with my wife and two daughters. I am currently in the Navy going on 18 years. I am getting close to retiring and decided to start a blog on my financial journey as I figure out what life looks like outside of the military. For me, I want to be able to spend more time with my family. My Naval career has taken me away quite a bit so I want to be around a bit more.

I have tried different avenues to add to my passive income to supplement my retirement pay which I discuss in my blog. I want to eventually get to the point where my passive income is as much as what I am making now and then some. I have a retirement account called the Thrift Savings Plan (similar to a 401k), a joint investment account through my financial adviser, two whole life insurance policies that are invested in the market, and rental units. I am working on my real estate license now as real estate has become my new obsession.

Follow our blog at averagejoefinances.com and be sure to like us on Facebook at: www.facebook.com/AverageJoeFinances

Looking forward to meeting other like minded people and watching our community grow.

Aloha – I’m Scott (sometimes go by Axl) and currently live in Hawaii with my wife, youngest step-daughter, grandson and (soon to be) mother-in-law.  Been in the US Navy since 1990, and just crossed 25 years Active Duty.  Working on my “retirement plan” now but looking like I will take it all the way to 30 years of Active Duty.

My financial journey has been a roller coaster throughout my Naval career as I’ve never had any real financial education – trial and error haven’t always put me down the right path, but I’m open about my mistakes and hoping the kids learn from them so they don’t repeat them.

Due to loving to travel, exposing the kids to new experiences and not wanting to work in a cubicle, I stumbled into Real Estate in a way to augment my retirement.  Having an undergrad in architecture, it seems the natural course, but the last 10 years of duty have been in government acquisitions and project management.  Aligning these had led me to focus on Multi-Family as my real estate strategy.

Looking forward to learning from this group.

I really hope this blog provides good information for you as well as this forum. We are hoping to grow into a community of wealth building, big thinking, go getters; and we are glad to have you with us on this journey!
